YOUR DERBY SUCCESS CHALLENGE:
USE VISUALIZATION TO IMPROVE A SKILL
TIP:
Visualization is an amazing way to improve our performance without even putting your skates on. Studies have proven that spending just 5 minutes a day visualizing can have an impressive impact. These mental imagery skills can be utilized when trying to perfect a drill or preparing for a bout day.
TOOLS:
4 Steps to Visualization:
Set – Choose a very specific skill you want to improve (eg. complete a hockey stop on your weaker side at high speed)
See – Imagine achieving your goal (eg. use your imagination and pretend to see yourself stopping effectively with a hockey stop)
Sense – See all of the detail with all of your senses (eg.imagine how your body feels when you use this stop. Use all your senses. What will you see? What will you hear? How will your skates feel? What position will your body be in? How much weight will be on each foot?)
Repeat – Set aside 3-4 minutes (or more) at the same time each day and visualize yourself achieving your goal. The more you repeat it, the better it will work.
TRICKS:
Choose a set time each day to do your visualization. Set an alarm on your phone to ensure your don’t forget.
Write the word ‘visualization’ and your goal on a sticky note. Put it somewhere that you will see often.
Use the tricks and tools you learned in Week 1: Building Better Habits to help ensure visualization becomes a habit that sticks.
Aiming to improve your track awareness? Expand your practice to include strategy. See yourself in situations on the track and visualize your strategy working well. Take it to the next step and also visualize what you will do if things don’t go as planned.
The power of visualization will soon be yours!
