YOUR DERBY SUCCESS CHALLENGE:
LEARN HOW TO BUILD BETTER HABITS

TIPS:
Success is built on a base of good habits. Often plans for behavioral change are begun with enthusiasm, and abandoned at some point during the process. This often leaves us feeling like failures, and wondering why we have so little will power. Research has recently shown that it often the habit setting method, and not a lack of will power or motivation that causes us to fall off track.

A habit is behavior that you perform over and over again, sometimes automatically. To make a habit stick, we need to harness the power of our unconscious and create new neural pathways. Aka. We need to hack our brain’s hard-wired habit loops.

Thankfully, the simple strategies below can help build better habits to give us the most chances of building success. It’s time to start – get a piece of paper and start your planning to create success in your next new habit.

TOOLS:
Choose what matters – Instead of choosing a habit you “should” do, figure out what you are really motivate to change. To be successful at any change, you need to really want it. Use your Derby Score Checklist to come up with a new habit idea if you need help.
Make it easy – When you start a new habit, make it so easy that you can’t say no to it. In fact, it should be so easy that it’s almost laughable. Choose one new habit that is so easy that you seriously can’t say no.
Find your trigger – Link your new habit with an existing behavior. If we link a new habit to something we already do consistantly, it can help us develop routines that happen almost automatically.
Plan for failure – Slipping up on your habits doesn’t make you a failure, it makes you normal. Develop a list of the potential issues and find solutions on how you will deal with them. Create a plan to get back on track as soon as possible.
Provide rewards – Your brain is wired to continue doing things that make you feel good. New Habit + Positive Feelings = More Likely To Repeat. Verbally congratulate yourself each and every time you complete your habit. Celebrate your success (even if they are small).
Provide consequences – Your brain also wants to avoid being uncomfortable. Put some stakes in the game and provide consequences if you don’t complete your habit as you planned.
